Is there something that bans Hannah from being a lawyer or marketing executive, other than her slacker creed? Or is it only a woman of the written word who is up for anything in bed, open to invitations and strange men? And is there something more narcissistic involved—the hope/expectation/motivation that those adventures would wind up immortalized in print?

I thought for sure that the writer had to be an intern whose native language isn’t English. How silly of me! I should have known that the Atlantic only lets their interns blog about cat gifs and feminist memes. Check out this lady’s credentials:

Not to be nitpicky (too late!), but a dangling modifier in the author’s blurb isn’t exactly promising. I know I’m the last person who should be criticizing someone else’s grammar, but then again, I’m also not the award-winning journalist here.

And yes, I know that this piece is essentially a blog post and it follows that the writing isn’t going to be as polished as an article that makes it to the print magazine, but the writing isn’t just lazy: it’s loopy and disjointed and distracting.

So how did something like this get…imprinted?

Oh right. Because it’s the Atlantic and name-dropping “Girls” is a surefire way to get hits on twitter.

All those teasers around the number one that Marvel has been posting began making sense today following an announcement at SXSW. Right now and through 11PM EST March 12 the company is making 700 first issues of its comics downloadable for free on Comixology and the Marvel Application.

Couldn’t you just torrent all these comics yourself anyway? Yes but that’s probably not ethical no matter how unreasonable the mark-ups are. Are any of these titles even worth reading? Heck if I know. Did I just add 700 comics to my cart anyway, regardless of whether I’ve already read them or not? Yes. Is that why Comixology keeps crashing? Probably. Are free things awesome? And most importantly, can I stop with this tired Q&A format??

Was the competition an homage or a corrective to past versions?

Definitely a corrective, since, taken as a whole, I don’t see that there is much to be valued in most of the covers that have graced the novel (there are, of course, notable exceptions). But it was also an experiment in which I posed the question: “Can it be done better?” For the gallery of covers in my book, I was interested to see what well-known designers might come up with when freed from editors, publishers and art directors and the constraints implicit in the marketing and selling of books. The result, I think, is a sort of meditation on what it means to create a cover for a complicated book, but it’s also about how a cover can add to or change the book’s meaning. In other words, there is a sense in which it’s a two-way street, which gives the designer tremendous power but also demands responsibility.

Can’t wait for this book to come out. It’s interesting to see a lot of the same elements in Lolita’s designs over the years: a lot of pink (the color of flesh; girlish innocence; Hallmark romance), lips (the visual double entendre) and unfortunately, a lot of pouty 13-year-olds a la Kubrick. Jamie Keenan’s is my favorite out of the redesigns.

Peter Mendelsund’s essay (linked in the Imprint article) is also a must-read.
