Warner Bros. is just peppering us with pictures. This one is found through a QR code on one of the earlier posters.

And while we’ve seen lots of moody character shots lately this one is a bit different. We only see Catwoman’s steel high heel stepping on what looks like a batarang. The lipstick kiss and X X suggests, as have the recent commercials, that Catwoman will have a sense of humor. What do you think?

Idgaf I like it. It reminds me of that fan poster from a while back．The lipstick and X’s are a little-over-the-top, which is fine with me because I like my Batman to be a little campy, but I don’t think they really fit in with the Nolan batverse which is too srs business for my liking.

Since its inception in 1925, The New Yorker has garnered remarkable reverence as much for its editorial style as it has for its inimitable covers, a singular medium for political and sociocultural visual satire matched perhaps only by Al Jaffee’s legendary MAD magazine fold-ins. In Blown Covers: New Yorker Covers You Were Never Meant to See, Françoise Mouly, New Yorker art director of nearly two decades, offers exactly what it says on the tin — a delicious forbidden taste of the art that didn’t quite nail it, or nailed it a bit too hard.

From Monica Lewinsky with a lollipop to Osama Bin Laden appraising proposed designs for the new World Trade Center, the images come from a slew of beloved New Yorker regulars, including Brain Pickings favorites Christoph Niemann, R. Crumb, and Art Spiegelman (who happens to be Mouly’s partner), and explore — some might say, exploit — our most deep-seated cultural conceits, our grandest fears, our most irrational beliefs, and our greatest unspoken truths. What emerges is a fascinating and unprecedented glimpse of the creative process behind the art of walking the fine line between the humorous and the haughty, the keen and the crass, the unapologetic and the too unapologetic.

Before arriving at the right character set to poke fun at our fears of terrorism — two Arab men — Barry Blitt tried the idea with two children and two businessmen. Ultimately, the idea was scrapped — the reference to the mild DIY explosive, despite the viral fame of the Mentos + Diet Coke mixing experiments, was deemed too obscure for the magazine’s audience.

Art Spiegelman winked at Norman Rockwell’s ‘Freedom from Want’ to comment on anti-Muslim violence.

Immediately preceding the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003, Christoph Niemann captured the anti-French sentiments sweeping America.

After Haitian immigrant Abner Louima was assaulted by white NYPD officers in 1997, Harry Bliss zeroed in on then-Mayor Rudy Giuliani’s semi-secret paranoia.

Though Art Spiegelman didn’t make the cover cut with this 1993 sketch, he and Mouly made it into the family’s Christmas card that year.

Much of what makes the book special — and, no doubt, what makes New Yorker covers sing — is Mouly’s relationship with the artists, whom she consistently encourages not to self-sensor or hold anything back. There emerges a kind of “fail better” mentality, underpinned by her conviction that even the most outrageous idea may serve as a gateway to an inspired, publishable line of thinking.

The book’s companion site offers a weekly cover contest, the entries to which have been surprisingly excellent. My favorite, by writer and illustrator Ella German, came last week, themed “The Gays,” in light of the recent historic moment for marriage equality, but also referencing Maurice Sendak, who had passed away the previous week. Though far from a gay rights activist, Sendak lived as an openly gay man with his partner of half a century. The two never had the opportunity to marry.

What Here At The New Yorker did for the magazine’s editorial voice on its 50th anniversary in 1975, Blown Covers has done for its brand of visual satire, offering a rare glimpse of Oz behind the curtain. And to those whose first blush might be that Oz is better off unseen and omnipotent, Mouly offers the following lens in this interview on Imprint:

One could have to do with demystifying, making the process more predictable. But I actually think that it’s so rich and so interesting that it’s actually even more interesting if you have a sense of how the images are thought about, rather than less. It doesn’t explain anything because it still is genius when somebody gets the right idea.

Yesterday I told you about the off the panel comments that Joe Quesada had to say about Marvel movies with female leads. Today I bring you more no on the panel comments. Reporter Abby Chandler who writes for the Badhaven site states Quesada told her that:

A script for a Ms/Captain Marvel movie is ready to go. They just needed an actress. Marvel are having a meeting in a couple of weeks and will be ready to announce some films then … He said we’d be pleasantly surprised.

I made an angry post yesterday about Quesada’s remarks (doesn’t matter, he’s still a prick) and had it queued but this is great, great news. Really hope it actually gets off the ground.

My casting choice would be Anna Torv :P

And re: Carol’s new costume…Eh, I guess it’s okay. It’s infinitely more practical, but I don’t like the gloves or the short hair. I also wish that they would have just kept the yellow/black/red color scheme instead of using a Superman-ish color scheme. The lightning bolt insignia is iconic, so I don’t know why they got rid of that.

I’ve been posting a lot of covers lately, so I’m going to share my favorite cover of any song, period. The Indigo Girls’ cover is so passionate and epic; I like it even more than the original by Dylan. (Also, I’m a sucker for live albums.)

as;dfj;askdf the CMC is my favorite part of the show cus they have the best friendship ever. Applebloom and Scootaloo’s relationship is a lot like AJ’s and RD’s —they argue all the time but they care about each other fiercely. Scootaloo and Sweetie Belle have been friends forever and they’ve known each other the longest, so they have all this shared history. And Sweetie and AB just get along really well- they would have naturally become friends anyway. DON’T JUDGE ME T___T

DC Comics today confirmed that there will be a new gay character in the DCU:

One of the major iconic DC characters will reveal that he is gay in a storyline in June,” Courtney Simmons, DC Entertainment’s senior vice president of publicity, confirmed to ABC News.

I think “iconic” rules out…

I thought that maybe it would be a woman, but I guess we know that it’s a dude for sure now. Yesterday, I answered Tim Drake jokingly but it’s unlikely since they said “REINTRODUCED”. But really, could you imagine the shitstorm that would follow?

This cover is 100% Magnetic Fields. At first Stephin Merrit’s crazy-deep bass voice didn’t work for me, but it’s grown on me. I love the VU-ish dissonant drone of the strings.

So I definitely noticed a trend in your favorite fictional cats (i.e.: so far I've seen 2 black cats). Is oreoreoreoreoreoreo also on your list?

This weirdly makes me miss high school; I remember that I was a little sad that I would be graduating and wouldn’t be able to read Ecce Romani II because I really wanted to know what happened to the Cornelius family. I kinda shipped Marcus and Flavia even though there was no textual evidence, and our whole class wanted Sexton to mori in fossa.

Latin can be incredibly fun to learn, but Ecce Romani is a good example of why learning a dead language is mostly useless unless you’re an art history student. While Spanish and French textbooks have chapters about how to buy apples at a supermarket, in Ecce Romani what you get is a chapter about how to deal with runaway slaves (apparently, you brand “FUG” for fugitive on their forehead) and another chapter about watching chariot races at the Circus Maximus. So I guess if those are concerns of yours…
